Corfu is a very satisfying blend of superb natural beauty and complex colonial history. A significant location throughout ancient Greek history, the island has since been occupied by the Venetians, French and British. Their cultural influence is visible throughout the island, particularly in the architecture, and little quirks, like the islanders' love of ginger beer, or "tsitsibeera". The island has several good museums and a strong musical tradition, with regular concerts throughout the summer. Corfu is large enough to cater for a variety of holiday requirements. Families often choose San Stefanos holidays are ideal for couples eager for a beautiful beach and the atmosphere of an old fishing village, with the mod-cons essential for a hassle-free break. Shopping here is good fun, with a range from local craftsmen, and a selection of convincing "designer" items! San Stefanos nightlife is pretty low key, but the sunset views from the scattered bars are stunning, and the tavernas offer some really delicious Corfiot cuisine. Boat trips depart from the harbour throughout the summer, and the energetic can try out some watersports; five miles down the coast, Paleokastritsa is particularly great for snorkelling.
The main town on Corfu's northern coast, Acharavi is bustling and provides many services for locals - the post office, banks and doctors are all here - and there's great choice for shopping. The beach is wide and very safe for children, with shallow water and clean sand. Behind the town, well-maintained walking paths lead up into the hills, and include the Corfu Trail, which uses old tracks and is an excellent way to explore the island. Admittedly great for families, Achavari holidays are equally fun for adults, with plenty of bars, traditional tavernas and a well-equipped watersports centre on the beach.
