The Hotel Villa Nisteri Beach is fronted by a private sweep of sand and bordered by thick pine forests, so sea views and a peaceful atmosphere are a given. The property is only a 5-minute drive from the island’s capital Limenas, so you’re not totally cut off from everything.

With its exposed cobbled-stone walls and terracotta roof tiles, the hotel is really traditional. It’s tucked away among trees and shrubbery, and the grounds are lit up by bulky lanterns when darkness falls. As for the rooms, they’re authentic and cosy – expect dark-wood furniture, and warm peach and pink soft furnishings. Each one comes with a balcony that looks out towards the island’s Acropolis and ancient theatre.

There’s a little taverna at the front of the hotel. It boasts an outdoor terrace that commands sweeping views across the Aegean Sea, and a menu that’s heavy on local cuisine.
