If the size of the pool matters then you need to book your Dominican Republic holiday at the Riu Naiboa in Bavaro. It’s a huge blue lagoon, complete with water fall, surrounded by palms and luscious vegetation, sun beds and thatched parasols and a poolside restaurant. But that’s not all this fabulous resort has to offer: a gym, tennis courts, volleyball, water polo, wind surfing, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling should tempt you into action. Or maybe you’d rather visit the spa to relax in the sauna and whirlpool or book in for a relaxing massage (local charge). The kids are catered for too, with their own section of the pool and a daytime entertainment programme.

The accommodation at the Riu Naiboa is delightful, in fresh, bright rooms with island-style wicker furniture and ceiling fans. There’s also air conditioning, satellite TV and either a balcony or terrace. Huge mouth-watering buffets in the main restaurant will keep the wolf from the door, but if you get peckish in between, the pool restaurant or lounge bar will be able to fix you up. The hotel is set back from the ivory sands of Bavaro Beach in a garden paradise in the Riu complex.
