Skiing has been one of the most entertaining ways to get down a hill since, amazingly, 5000BC, and it's an excellent way to get some winter sun. Europe has several ideal locations, all very easy to reach. The French Alps offer a superb range of ski holidays, with great cross country and downhilling at resorts all the way from Avoriaz, in the north, to Isola 2000, a couple of hours drive from Nice. The Pyrenees are also worth investigating, and the Vosges, Jura and Massif Central ranges have well-equipped slopes. Many resorts are equipped with snow cannons, for when natural snowfall is light, most have alternative activities and winter sports.
