Fihalhohi Island Resort details

With its Eden-like surroundings and traditional water bungalows, the Fihalhohi Island Resort offers up a miles-from-anywhere feeling.

Perched on its own little island in the South Male Atoll, this place has got a setting that’s as out-of-this-world as it gets. Thick greenery, coconut palms and talcum-powder beaches are pretty much all you’ll find here, so if you’re after a bit of escapism, it’s a great choice.

As for the bungalows, they’re dotted around the island in one and two-storey blocks. And with their thatched rooftops, pastel-hued walls and dark-wood balconies, they’ve got a distinctly tropical vibe. Inside, tiled floors, whitewashed walls and wicker furniture give things a fresh, summery feel, while lime bedspreads and cushions provide splashes of colour. Follow the wooden jetty into the turquoise lagoon, meanwhile, and you’ll find water villas propped up on stilts. Opt for one of these, and you can fall asleep each night to the sound of the waves lapping underneath you.

Days here can be as relaxed or as lively as you want them to be. Activity-wise, you’ve got things like catamaran sailing, canoeing and badminton. Plus, there’s a coral reef bordering the island’s lagoon, so diving and snorkelling are easy to come by. Elsewhere, there’s a spa, where treatments include a Dead Sea mud wrap and a green tea body scrub.

When it comes to dining, the buffet restaurant offers something different every night. Expect themes like ‘When In Rome’, where pizza and pasta are the mainstays, and ‘Fiesta Mexicana’, where fajitas, burritos and quesadillas make an appearance. After-dinner entertainment comes in the form of regular live music and karaoke.
