Set in parkland, this hotel offers an excellent spa and spectacular views of the Bay of Naples.

Hotel Continental Mare is set on a clifftop overlooking Cafeiro Bay, with views stretching out as far as the Bay of Naples. It’s in rolling parkland laced with bougainvillea, citrus trees and herbs, so it feels really peaceful.

Rooms are in a series of small, whitewashed villas designed in traditional Mediterranean style, with flat roofs, arched doorways and wrought-iron balconies. Inside, the rooms are spacious and neutral in tone, with splashes of blue and yellow courtesy of the soft-furnishings.

The hotel has 2 outdoor thermal pools, with temperatures averaging between 28 and 30˚C. Both of them make the most of the sea views. There are more pools in the spa at the nearby Hotel Continental Terme. You have full use of it, and there’s a free shuttle bus to get you there. Many of the treatments involve fangotherapy – mineral-rich mud – and the treatment list includes warm mud baths and mud massages.

The hotel makes a wonderful base for exploring Ischia. It’s a scenic 20-minute walk down to Ischia Town’s port – it’s rather steep, so the hotel runs a shuttle bus as well. There’s also a bus stop outside the hotel that puts you within easy reach of places like La Mortella tropical gardens, brainchild of composer Sir William Walton and his Argentinian wife, Susana.
