To say the Holiday Calbis has a privileged spot is an understatement. Set in Dalyan’s conservation area, it puts 3-metre-tall grasses and interlinked lakes right on your doorstep. It’s as though it’s bagged a spot in Mother Nature’s front garden, so expect to see plenty of kingfishers and skylarks flitting through the gardens. Plus you’re just 20 minutes by local bus from the resort centre to the famous turtle beach, the Iztuzu Sandbar, where endangered loggerhead turtles come to nest. But it’s not all about the wildlife in these parts. You’ll find plenty in the way of shops, bars and restaurants in the village centre, too.
The hotel itself was designed to make the most of its surroundings. With mountains to one side and reed banks to the other, it’s as peaceful as they come. Then there are the gardens to consider. Large, landscaped and filled with palm trees, fountains and flower beds, as well as several shady terraces, they certainly set the scene for relaxation. And there’s no better place to enjoy it than by one of the two pools. The main pool is a curvy stretch of turquoise surrounded by white canvas sun shades and candy-striped parasols, while the second is slightly smaller and comes with hammocks and over-sized floor cushions for a laid-back vibe.
Inside, the family that own and run this place have kept things simple. Take the lobby for instance. All polished marble floors, open brickwork and wrought-iron chandeliers - this hexagonal space is the epitome of Ottoman Gothic style. The restaurant is open-sided so you can feast your eyes on those garden views while you tuck into your Turkish buffet breakfast or enjoy dinner to a cicada soundtrack. The bedrooms, meanwhile, are an oasis of calm with dark-wood furniture, marble floors and a cream colour scheme.
