Views don’t come much better than the ones from this historical property. It’s set on a hillside in the village of Monte, overlooking Funchal and the ink-blue waters of the Atlantic. The whole place is cocooned in sub-tropical gardens, and nestled among the greenery is a quaint chapel that’s been beautifully restored.

Inside the original pink-painted manor house, you’ll find a lounge, reading room and billiard room, plus an elegant cocktail bar where traditional Royal tea is served. The interiors have been designed and furnished in authentic Madeiran style, with original wood flooring, antique furniture and Persian rugs.

Rooms are set in a newer building just behind the manor house. They’re comfortable and spacious, with cream-coloured walls and dark-wood furniture, and all have balconies with views over the gardens.

Garden views are also on the menu at the indoor pool, and at the restaurant – a stylish space with black-and-white checked floors and huge, arched windows. The à la carte dishes here are a mixture of Madeiran and Portuguese specialities, and international fare.

Location-wise, you’re right in the heart of Monte, and just a couple of minutes’ walk from the cable car to Funchal. And right behind the quinta is an area of World Heritage-listed Laurissilva forest.
