With its beachside setting and enormous swimming pool, the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa has made the world’s glossy travel magazines stand up and take notice.

In 2010, the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa won a Conde Nast award for being one of the World’s Top New Hotels. And you only need to look at the setting to work out why. This place is on the edge of a white sandy beach and cocooned by tropical greenery.

The facilities are world-class, too. The swimming pool here is the longest in South East Asia. It’s accompanied in the grounds by an entourage of sporting facilities, including a mountain bike trail and squash court. The hotel also has its own luxury spa, which goes beyond the call of duty by offering treatments like paraffin hand therapies, body scrubs and therapy baths alongside traditional massages.

From a deli to a Mediterranean restaurant, there are lots of dining options at the hotel. But the highlights have to be the Japanese eatery, Sakura, which features a sushi bar and teppanyaki station, and the Thai restaurant, Ta-Krai, which has a sunken seating area.
