This beautifully converted farmhouse is a real find. Framed by pretty gardens, it's set in the heart of peaceful countryside, but the market town of Loulé is only about three kilometres away so although it’s a real rural retreat, the rest of the world’s not too far off.

Inside, A Quinta is a delight. It’s easy to see that the restoration has been a labour of love. The owners scoured local markets for just the right antiques to give the house a homely feel. Original feeding troughs have been kept as a special feature in the large living room, part of which was once an old stable. And its whitewashed walls and sloping beamed roof are warmed up with a colourful wall hanging and comfy terracotta-coloured sofas. Other interesting original features have been kept in the master bedroom – tucked away off the sitting room – which in years gone by was the old cowshed.

Outside, terraces run along the sides and front of the house, so there’s plenty of space. And al fresco meals are all taken care of with a built-in barbecue and covered dining area. Taking pride of place is a lovely freeform swimming pool with Roman steps. And gated access to it means this is a good choice for families with young children.
