With a commanding position on a hillside above Aghios Nikolaos, the Micro Village Hotel and Pool is somewhere we’d particularly recommend for a relaxing holiday on Crete. This is a traditional family-run hotel, well-maintained and stylish, both inside and out. It stands in a lovely garden setting and the freeform seawater pool is a good size. This is surrounded by sun terraces with plenty of loungers and parasols, and there’s a pool bar for those essential cool drinks. The Micro Village also has a tennis court and a gym, with sauna, for both of which there is a small local charge.

Inside, the charming rooms are furnished in simple Cretan style, with air conditioning, fridges and balconies. Breakfast is served in the breakfast room and there is also a bar. The Micro Village is just a few minutes’ walk from the nearest tavern, and a 15-minute walk from a fabulous sandy beach where water sports are available. The resort is a busy little fishing harbour – look out for fresh seafood - and it has a good nightlife scene.
