Set in a quiet valley among groves of cork trees, this old stone farmhouse has been transformed into a villa full of rustic charm. Contemporary facilities and furniture blend seamlessly with the original features, like the open fireplaces and bread oven in the big stone-walled kitchen.

With its two bedrooms – one a double with full-length window, the other a twin with skylight – the villa is ideal for small families. There’s plenty of room to relax inside and out, while in the main living area downstairs there are both table tennis and snooker tables. Upstairs, there’s another sitting room and a veranda looking out over the valley and nearby farm.

Outside, shrubs and trees surround a tranquil patio for al fresco dining. And there’s lots more room to enjoy the outdoors on a lower level below the villa. Here, a wide honey-coloured paved terrace frames an attractive swimming pool.

It feels a world away from the busy Algarve coastal resorts – half-an-hour’s drive away. But actually Quinta do Vale is just a short drive from the nearest shops and restaurants in the charming mountain town of Monchique. Or the stout-hearted can walk there along a steep track in 30-45 minutes.
