The Prince Staphylos on the island of Skopelos is a rather smart hotel that retains authentic Greek styling throughout. It sits in beautiful gardens with a rugged mountain backdrop, in an attractive white building with dark wood window shutters and balconies. A good-sized rectangular pool is surrounded by grassy sun terraces and flowering shrubs and, with a drink from the pool bar, it would be easy to let time slip by on your sun lounger.

Inside the Prince Staphylos exudes Greek charm, with white walls, exposed beams and a flagstone floor in the tavern-style restaurant. The bedrooms are light and airy with wooden floors and traditional wooden furniture, and all have air conditioning, fridges, televisions and either a balcony or a terrace; upgrades to sea views are available. The hotel is just 300 metres from the centre of Skopelos Town and its pretty harbour and only 90 metres from the sea, though the nearest beach is a ten-minute drive.
