The Hotel Riu Chiclana is a grand-looking whitewashed property, spread out among manicured lawns and palm-lined walkways. It’s got peaceful surroundings, but is only a 10-minute walk down 80 steps from Playa de la Barrosa Beach. Plus, there’s a 36-hole golf course a couple of minutes away.

Days here are best spent by the hotel’s 2 swimming pools. They’re bordered by sun-trap terraces, and one of them comes with a swim-up bar that serves drinks all day. Little ones have their own paddling pool, complete with slides and a pirate ship.

At mealtimes, there’s a buffet restaurant serving everything from pasta to fish. There’s an impressive dessert zone, too, where you can help yourself to cakes and jellies. In the summer months, Italian and grill eateries open, as well, and there’s an Andalucian place that cooks up local specialities.
