The Grand Hotel de la Ville is a little corner of heaven on the cliffs of Sorrento, but well-positioned for an easy 200-metre walk into the centre of this sophisticated Italian resort. Thanks to its superb location, the sun terraces and balconies of this lovely hotel are afforded stunning views across the Gulf of Naples to Vesuvias and beyond. In a pretty garden with lemon groves you’ll find a gorgeous pool with hydromassage jets; but climb to the hotel’s roof and you’re spoilt with another, also with hydromassage and even better views! However, if you’d rather swim in the sea, guests are able to use the bathing facilities at a sister hotel nearby.

Inside, the bedrooms are cool and elegant with Italianate styling, traditional tiled floors and ravishing carved wooden bedsteads. All of them feature air conditioning, TVs, minibars and balconies; upgrades to partial sea views are available. Meals are served in the opulent pale green and white Altea Restaurant, and clubby wood panelled Magnolia Bar is the perfect place for cocktails.
