Designed to blend into its beautiful island surroundings, the Hotel Doryssa is brimming with traditional charm.

More dinky Greek village than hotel complex, this place is certainly easy on the eye. Take the setting for example. With rugged hillsides to the rear and a cobalt sea to the front, the views are fantastic. What’s more, the hotel itself is just as good-looking. Built in a traditional style – think sugar cube apartments with whitewashed walls and terracotta tile roofs – and surrounded by exotic gardens, it’s every inch the Greek Island escape.

The accommodation itself is spacious and airy. White walls and tiled floors add a touch of old-school Greece, while wrought-iron beds and soft muslin curtains strike an elegant vibe. Rooms come with their own balcony or veranda, too – ideal for enjoying the postcard-worthy sea views whenever you like. Modern trimmings like air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and mini-fridges complete the picture.

Outside, the pool steals the show. It’s a big rectangular number bordered by a wide sun terrace and a whirlpool bath. Add a snack bar to the mix and it’s a top spot to chill out. The beach, meanwhile, is just a stone’s skim away – so swapping sun lounger for sand couldn’t be easier. Plus, there is a great selection of watersports on offer.

Food-wise, everything’s served up as a buffet. Expect a mix of Greek meze, fresh seafood and just-baked breads – not to mention plenty of international favourites. For something different, check out the regular theme nights, where tasty local delicacies are accompanied by live music and traditional Greek dancing. In terms of other entertainment, there’s a cultural centre sitting at the heart of the hotel, designed to feel just like an old-world Samian village.
