Hotel Port Adriano deserves an Oscar for best location. It sits just above a sandy beach with El Toro’s impressive new port designed by Phillipe Starck close at hand. And there are no less than seven golf courses virtually on the doorstep.

As far as looks go, its façade is reminiscent of Rome’s Colosseum. Its arches curve around the cliff-top like an amphitheatre – giving every inch of the hotel grandstand views of the bay below. And in the lobby, a titanic stretch of marble merges into a wall of windows that overlook the ocean.

The pool has a front-row seat, too. A sunken affair on the edge of the terrace, it’s the epitome of infinity styling and comes complete with smart wooden sun loungers, potted palms and vast white canvas parasols. And if you really want to raise the bar on relaxation there’s a state-of-the-art spa here, featuring everything from hydrotherapy pools to muscle-melting massages.

Room-wise, it’s modern and stylish all the way. Each sophisticated space comes with added extras like satellite TV, bathrobes and sea views. For something really special, book a junior suite – they’ve got separate living areas, oversized bathrooms and whirlpool bathtubs.

On the restaurant front, there’s more of the same effortless chic. Widescreen bay views, white linen and contemporary chandeliers are the backdrop to an a la carte menu. The lobby bar, with views across the new port, meanwhile, brings a touch of the outdoors indoors with conservatory-type wicker chairs and nautical red and white-striped cushions.
