If you want a taste of traditional Madeira without foregoing your creature comforts, the Quinta da Penha de Franca is ideal. It’s made up of two properties – there’s an old Portuguese manor house perched on a cliffside, and a newer wing, Quinta da Penha de Franca Mar, down by the sea. The two parts are connected by a road, footbridge and a lift, and both offer up the same great facilities.
In the manor house, you’ll find plenty in the way of traditional touches. Intimate lounges are filled with old paintings and period furniture, while bedrooms are dressed in floral prints. There’s also a piano bar. And on the food front, you’ve got a restaurant offering international dishes - your evening meals are served here.
Down in the new wing, bedrooms are more modern in style, with white walls and pale soft furnishings giving them a laid-back vibe. Outside, the pool bar is really popular, serving up a good range of drinks and snacks right by the water’s edge.
Talking of pools, this place has two – one in each building. The one higher up is surrounded by greenery, while the other is just footsteps from the Atlantic. In fact, the Quinta da Penha de Franca Mar has a swimming platform that leads right into the ocean.
Location-wise, the hotel is about a 10 to 15-minute walk from the centre of Funchal, depending on which section you stay in.
