The award winning Quinta de Bela Vista is a five-star haven of tranquillity where guests can relax completely in an atmosphere of luxurious calm. Set in gorgeous mature gardens three kilometres outside the centre of Funchal, this historic manor house still carries an air of historic grandeur. The interiors are lavish with period detailing and classic furniture – from the black-and-white tiled dining room with its vast stone fireplace to the plush chintz sofas, ceiling rose and china cabinets of the lounge. There are two exquisite restaurants here, serving either table d’hote or a la carte; there are also two bars and most nights live piano music.

The bedrooms are sumptuous with dark mahogany bedsteads and plush furnishings; the amenities include air conditioning, cable TV and bathrobes, with upgrades to balconies and superior rooms available. Out in the garden there is a large rectangular pool, with sun terraces that overlook the stunning Mediterranean coast below, and a pool bar.
