Quintinha de Sao Joao details
Only a short walk from the centre of Funchal, five-star luxury awaits at the Quintinha de Sao Joao, an old manor house, which fuses traditional elegance with 5-star luxury. The garden here is stunning with stone pathways weaved through beautifully manicured lawns, and lush trees and beautiful flowers alongside Victorian-style lanterns and wood benches.
The hotel itself is an old, whitewashed manor house with stunning iron balconies and traditional terracotta roofs. It was built in the 18th-century, and is one of the oldest buildings in Madeira. There are many traditional touches, and there’s beautiful antique furniture, ornaments and a baby grand piano. The rooms offer things such as wooden headboards and pretty rugs. But all is set up for 21st-century luxury, so there are separate lounges and mod-cons such as air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. There are two swimming pools - an indoor and outdoor. There’s a raised sun terrace, surrounded by a small lawn and loungers. There’s a gym, plus a spa for holiday beauty treatments. The restaurant specialises in gourmet Goan cuisine, it has a lengthy menu that features the likes of stuffed squid and spiced pork.
