Right on the beach and with one of the best restaurants in town, Hotel Odjo D’Agua is a small hotel with some nice touches.

The setting is what makes this place stand out from the crowd. Curving round a secluded cove, it comes with a private stretch of golden sand where there’s a brightly-painted bar offering drinks and ice-creams. You’ll also find the Alma Spa here, hidden behind fluttering canvas sails. And it’s all less than a five-minute stroll from the centre of Santa Maria.

The hotel itself is simply decorated but still stylish. Outside, it’s all white arches and bougainvillea, with a Roman-style pool taking centre-stage on the terrace. Indoors, meanwhile, the bedrooms work a peaches-and-cream colour scheme to good effect. They come with wood-frame French windows and spacious black-and-white tiled bathrooms. In-room extras include air-conditioning and minibars, and most rooms have a good view of Santa Maria Bay.

On the food front, mealtimes are geared towards getting back to nature. The restaurant juts out over the sea and serves up fresh-from-the-sea lobster, shark and prawns on a roomy patio. Plus, it offers plenty in the way of Cape Verdian and African cuisine.
